How Much Do Developers Make? The Median and What Moves It

In the US, software developers earned a median annual wage of $135,980 in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle of the market is wide: the lowest 10 percent earned under $82,460 and the top 10 percent over $214,670. Developer type, industry, location, seniority, and specialisation decide where someone lands.

The official number

The most reliable public figure for developer pay in the US comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Its Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics put the median annual wage for software developers at $135,980 in May 2025. Half of software developers earned more than that, half earned less.

Three things about what the figure measures matter. It covers employees, not the self-employed or freelancers. It is wage pay: it does not include stock grants, and it leaves out bonuses that are not tied to output. And it is a single national median across every industry, city, and seniority level, which is why the range around it matters more than the number itself.

How wide the range is

BLS also publishes the spread. In May 2025 the lowest-paid 10 percent of software developers earned less than $82,460, and the highest-paid 10 percent earned more than $214,670. The top of that range is not a ceiling either: senior engineers at large technology companies often earn well above it once equity is counted, and that equity never appears in BLS wage data.

So the honest answer to how much a developer makes is a band: the distance between the 10th and 90th percentiles is about $130,000, before counting stock. Where any one developer lands in that band depends on a handful of factors, covered below.

Factor 1: which kind of developer

Developer is a loose word, and BLS splits it into separate occupations with different medians, all from May 2025:

  • Software developers: $135,980.
  • Software quality assurance analysts and testers: $104,300.
  • Web developers: $92,650.

The gap between web developers and software developers is about $43,000 at the median. Some of that reflects the work itself and some reflects where web developers are employed, which includes agencies, small businesses, and freelancing. Title conventions blur the line; a developer building a complex web application at a product company is often classified and paid as a software developer. The title question is covered separately in software engineer vs developer pay.

Factor 2: industry

Within software developers alone, BLS reports different medians by industry for May 2025. Of the industries that employ the most software developers, software publishers paid the highest median, at $164,550. Manufacturing was $136,330, management of companies $135,680, finance and insurance $135,460, and computer systems design and related services, which includes consultancies and IT services firms, $132,050.

The pattern holds beyond the US. Companies whose product is software tend to pay engineers more than companies where software is a cost centre, because engineering output is directly tied to revenue.

Factor 3: location and currency

Pay varies enormously by country, and national medians are not comparable without accounting for cost of living and currency. As one contrast, Indeed India's job-board data for the general Developer title, updated 14 October 2026 from 486 self-reported salaries, shows an average base salary of about ₹48,400 a month, or roughly ₹5.8 lakh a year. That is a self-reported average from one job board, not an official statistic like the BLS figures above. Indian offers are usually quoted as CTC in LPA, which is higher than take-home pay; see what LPA means in a salary.

Within a country, large technology hubs pay more than smaller cities. Remote work has blurred this. Some employers pay one rate everywhere, many adjust pay by location band, and some hire internationally as contractors at local market rates.

Factor 4: level and scope

Seniority is usually the largest single driver inside one company. Junior, mid-level, senior, staff, and principal bands can each differ by a wide margin, and promotions are tied to scope: owning a system, leading technical decisions, or setting direction for several teams. Two developers with the same title and years of experience can be paid very differently if one is operating at a higher level of scope.

Years alone do not guarantee movement. A developer who has repeated the same year of work five times is often paid like a mid-level engineer; one who has taken on progressively harder problems moves faster.

Factor 5: specialisation

Scarce, high-leverage skills earn a premium: machine learning and AI systems, security, distributed systems and infrastructure, and some niche platforms. The premium tends to track how costly mistakes are and how few people can do the work well. For a closer look at one specialisation, see how much AI engineers earn.

How to use these figures

For developers. Use the BLS median as a sanity check, not a target. Look for current ranges in pay-transparent job postings for your role, level, and location, and compare total compensation, not base salary alone. When negotiating, anchor on the specific level of the role you are being offered.

For hiring managers. Benchmark against the right occupation and industry. Paying a web developer budget for a role that needs a software engineer's systems skills usually produces a long, failed search. Publishing an honest range saves time on both sides.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a software developer make in the US?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $135,980 for software developers in May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned under $82,460 and the highest 10 percent over $214,670. These figures cover employees' wages and exclude stock grants, so total compensation at large technology companies can be substantially higher.
How much do web developers make compared with software developers?
BLS reports a May 2025 median of $92,650 for web developers against $135,980 for software developers. Part of the gap reflects the work and part reflects where web developers work, including agencies, small firms, and freelancing. Developers building complex web applications at product companies are often classified and paid as software developers.
Which industry pays developers the most?
Among the large employing industries BLS lists for software developers, software publishers had the highest May 2025 median at $164,550. Manufacturing, management of companies, and finance and insurance were each around $135,000 to $136,000, and computer systems design and related services, which includes consultancies, was $132,050.
Do developer salaries include bonuses and stock?
Official wage statistics such as BLS data cover wage pay and exclude stock grants, so they understate total compensation where equity is common. Many technology employers pay a mix of base salary, annual bonus, and equity that vests over several years. Compare offers on the full package, and value unlisted startup equity cautiously.
